SILVER SPRING, MD – One by one, and troop by troop, scouts of all ages joined a variety of health professionals at the National Museum of Health and Medicine's (NMHM) annual Scout Day on October 15, 2016.

With more than 300 attendees visiting the event that morning, smiles weren't in short supply. Boy and girl scouts from all over D.C., Maryland, and Virginia used the event as an opportunity to complete requirements toward first aid and emergency preparedness badges, as well as an opportunity to speak to first responders, doctors, a veterinarian, and even some other scouts, too. Learning how to perform CPR, how to apply a tourniquet, how to wash a wound, and the importance of veterinary medicine were just some of the topics that were covered.

Learning about emergency preparedness and safety has long been a part of being a scout. "It's important for everyone to learn about emergency preparedness, it doesn't matter how old they are, everyone can save a life," said Elizabeth Weissbrod. Weissbrod, a 3-D medical simulation designer with the Uniformed Services University Val G. Hemming Simulation Center at the Fort Detrick-Forest Glen Annex, said she believes it's important for everyone – not just children— to have a basic understanding of medicine and what to do in an emergency. Weissbrod continued, "Knowing what to do instead of freezing up in an emergency situation is what can make a difference when it comes to saving someone's life."

Also taking part in Scout Day were members of the Fort Detrick-Forest Glen Annex Fire Department. Scouts had the opportunity to explore the fire engine, talk to the first responders, and learned the importance of knowing what steps to take during an emergency, such as a fire, and what to tell a 9-1-1 dispatcher in the event of an emergency. "It's a really great opportunity for the kids to get to talk to the people who handle emergencies every day and ask questions – we're really appreciative of everything these men and women do every day," said Cindy Mariz, mother of a Girl Scout Daisy in attendance.

While most of the stations at Scout Day focused on human medicine and first aid response, the event also boasted another opportunity for learning - veterinary medicine. U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Gwynne Kinley-Way, DVM, Public Health Activity, Fort Belvoir, also supported the event. Armed with pelts from various animals across the world, and a ready source of veterinary knowledge, Kinley-Way said "It's my job to educate people about the many facets of veterinary medicine - many people don't know what a veterinarian can do, it's really more than what most people think."

The scouts and their families relished the opportunity to learn about animals and medicine from someone with over 21 years' of experience. "I think the addition of veterinary medicine is a great thing for this event," said Matt Precubia, father of a boy scout at the event. "It gives the children an opportunity to learn about the animals, their environment, what they eat, and what to do if one comes near them out in the wild – it teaches them to respect the animals, and who knows, maybe it will inspire some of them to become a vet themselves," he continued.

NMHM's public programs connect the mission of the Department of Defense museum with the public. NMHM was founded as the Army Medical Museum in 1862 and moved to its new location in Silver Spring, MD in 2012. Information on upcoming events can be found at www.medicalmuseum.mil.
