Beginning in the American Civil War, the Army and Navy fitted out and manned hospital ships to support soldiers, sailors, and Marines fighting on both land and sea. Under international law, these ships enjoy non-combatant status, though this has not always kept them safe in bitterly fought wars. Join museum staff member and historian Steven Hill when he presents a brief history of United States hospital ships and the people who sailed on them: medical staff, sailing crew, and patients.
FREE! Open to the public. No RSVP required.
